3.9 further synthesis and analysis Flashcards
(12 cards)
what are synthetic routes?
show reagents, conditions and procedures to get from one compound to next
how are synthetic routes designed?
use non-hazardous starting materials (less accidents/ environmental damage)
not too wasteful- high atom economy and % yield
draw the organic synthesis routes for organic compounds
poster
draw the organic synthesis routes for aromatic compounds
poster
what is NMR spectroscopy?
technique to help determine structure of a molecule
2 types- 13C NMR and 1H NMR
t,q 3:2
CH3-CH2-
(ethyl group)
t, t 2:2
-CH2-CH2-
d, q 3:1
CH3- CH-
s 3
CH3-
(methyl group)
s 1
-OH
why do you use CDCl3 or CCl4 as a solvent in hydrogen nmr?
they dont contain hydrogen atoms
why is TMS used to calibrate in nmr?
- signal is far away from others- 0 by definition
- only gives one signal
- non-toxic
- inert
- low bp so easily removed from sample
