3.9 waste minimisation Flashcards
(7 cards)
define waste minimisation
Waste minimization is a process involving the reduction of unwanted or unusable resources produced by a business in an attempt to improve efficiency and effectiveness
define waste
any resource that is discarded because it can not be further used in the production process
define reduce, list some examples how a business can reduce, give a contemporary example
A waste minimization strategy that aims to decrease the amount of resources, labor or time discarded during production.
For example just in time (JIT) reduces inventory levels, storage costs and waste in storage
Also Quality assurance, Robotics
🏭 Toyota Australia
Toyota uses the Just in Time (JIT) production system to reduce excess inventory, lower storage costs, and minimise waste during car manufacturing. This lean approach improves efficiency, reduces overproduction, and enhances overall profitability.
define reuse, explain and give a contemporary example
A waste minimization strategy that aims to make use of items which have been discarded (thrown away or gotten rid of)
* After serving their original purpose, items can be repurposed for something else
* Reusing helps save money by reducing waste disposal costs
* If a business can reuse inputs, it may also create a second income stream by reselling or repurposing them
Reuse example
* Carlton & United Breweries uses barley in the production of beer. Once fermented, the barley is no longe
r needed in the production process. Rather than discarding the barley into landfill, Carlton & United Breweries sells the leftover barley as livestock feed.
define recycle, explain and give a contemporary example
Recycle
* Recycle: A waste minimization strategy that aims to transform items which would otherwise have been discarded
* Using recycled materials in production can lower costs
Packaging products in recyclable materials benefits the environment and improves a business’s public image
Recycle example:
* Domino’s Pizza Australia has partnered with Visy to recycle the cardboard from their pizza boxes. This helps reduce waste sent to landfill and supports sustainable packaging practices. The initiative also enhances Domino’s environmentally responsible brand image.
pros and cons of waste minimisation
pros
-reputation; reducing waste is also beneficial for the environment and many consumers prefer environmentally friendly companies
-gives competitive advantage
-lowers long term costs
-reducing impact on the environment
cons
-initial high costs and complexity of implementation
