EE34 Flashcards
What is the LPI?
living planet index
What are the catagories of the red list
extinct (EX)
extinct in the wild (EW)
Critically endagered (CR) >90% in 10 yrs/ 3 generations
Endangered (E) >70% in 10 years/3 generations
Vulnerable (VU) >50% in 10 years/ 3 generations eg. hippo
Near threatened (NT)
Least Concern (LC)
Data deficient (DD)
Not evaluated (EE)
What are 2 ways of measuring range of size?
extent occurance - join dots of habitat so encircle general area
area of occupancy - like a grid with dots
subset of eoo and acknowledges that there are holes in distance of species with ee
What is PVA?
population viability analysis
CR >50% risk of extinction in 10years/3 generations
EN > 20% risk of extinction in 20 years/ 5 generations
VU > 10% risk in 100 years
what percentage of organism types are threatened with extinction?
11% birds
25% mammals
33% amphibians
how many species are critically endagered?
so how many species will be extinct in a year
3879
20 species per year
assuming half will die out in 10 years
What are the pros of the red list?
- less data required
- easy to understand
- quick - practical
- overprotective rather than under
- could convert to probabilities
What are the cons of the red list?
- makes assumptions
- inaccurate
- still requires some data
- species definition
- could be larger variation between species - thresholds- just below or above, put in distinct categories.
