APPARENT WIND?
A
- wind that the sailor FEELS which is the COMBINATION of the TRUE WIND and the wind caused by the sailor’s motion

BATTENS?
A
- FLEXIBLE STRIPS/tubes placed in pockets in the sail to help maintain the SAIL’S RIGID SHAPE.

A
- WIDEST PART of a boat. The point half way between the bow(front) and stern(rear) of a sailboard.

A
- sailing with the wind coming DIRECTLY over the BEAM. Sailing b/w 80-100 DEGREES from the direction of the wind.

A
- the CURVED PART/POCKET of a properly rigged sail. In general, sails rigged with MORE CAMBER will have MORE POWER/LESS SPEED than those with less camber

A
- a sail with ONE/+ CAMBER INDUCERS

CAMBER INDUCERS?
A
- PLASTIC DEVICES that hold the SAIL AWAY from the MAST so that there is a SMOOTH AIR FLOW across the MAST to the SAIL on both the windward and leeward sides of the sail

CENTERBOARD?
A
- RETRACTABLE DEVICE at the center of the board that, when down, changes the center of resistance in order to make it easier to SAIL UPWIND.

CENTER OF EFFORT (CE)
A
- POINT at which all the FORCE OF THE WIND can be thought to be CONCENTRATED.

CENTER OF LATERAL RESISTANCE (CLR)
A
- POINT at which all the FORCE of the WATER on the BOARD may be thought to be CONCENTRATED. On the novice boards, the CR is approx at centerboard.

A
- sailing as CLOSE to the DIRECTION of the wind as possible (approx 45 DEGREES from the winds direction)
