WINDWARD vs. LEEWARD?
A
- windward: direction UPWIND from point of reference
- leeward: direction DOWNWIND from POR

UPHAULING THE SAIL? (5)
A
- BOARD RIGHT ANGLE to WIND; SAIL downwind.
- feet on CENTERLINE of BOARD;
- KNEES slightly BENT;
- ARMS straight;
- LIFT SAIL SLOWLY;

WHEN THE WIND PULLS YOUR SAILS?
A
- “SEVEN” POSITION»_space; hips thrust forwards; shoulders leaning back.

If you are beginning to be OVERPOWERED?
A
- LET the SAIL go with your BACK HAND.

Turning UPWIND?
A
- move sail BACK and OVER REAR of BOARD; hold this position until the board changes direction, then move the sail back to the neutral position;

Turning DOWNWIND?
A
- move the SAIL FORWARD and ACROSS THE FRONT OF THE BOARD (strong wind, remember to lean back!)

TACKING vs. JIBING?
A
- tacking: turning TOWARDS THE WIND
- jibing: turning AWAY from the WIND

TACKING? (5)
A
- LOOK BACKWARDS to make sure you’re not turning on anyone
- drop your FRONT HAND to the MAST just below the BOOM
- PULL DOWN(sail towards back), LEAN BACK
- ARMS STRAIGHT, KNEES BENT, WIDER STANCE, LOTS OF LITTLE STEPS
- as board points INTO WIND, swing your body around
- KEEP RIG AWAY FROM YOU (keep it close, you’re going to go down)

NONPLANING JIBE? (5)
A
- BROAD REACH
- move hands to BACK of BOOM; tip FORWARDS
- move back foot FURTHER BACK on BOARD (knees bent!)
- DEAD RUN (wind behind); BACK FOOT PERPENDICULAR, FRONT FOOT FORWARDS;
- LET GO of BOOM with BACK of HAND(sail flips); HOLD ON TO MAST WITH OTHER HAND; SWITCH HANDS;

SAILING DOWNWIND? (5)
A
- BROAD REACH
- turn DOWNWIND
- SAIL is 90 degrees from board
- HEELS are together on CENTERLINE
- make sure mast is NOT TIPPING FORWARD (as wind gets stronger, move back on the board)

- boat OVERTAKING ANOTHER BOAT SHALL KEEP CLEAR of the boat being overtaken
- BOAT on PORT TACK(left hand forward), keep CLEAR of boat on STARBOARD TACK
- TWO BOATS same TACK, BOAT WINDWARD keeps clear of BOAT LEEWARD

- WATERSTART in BOTH DIRECTIONS
- ability to CONTROL the board during a PLANE
- being able to use the HARNESS lines effectively
- PROPER DOCK and STARTING TECHNIQUE (extra board techniques e.g. carve turns)

A
- DIRECTION of a BOAT’S TRAVEL relative to the DIRECTION OF THE WIND (close reach/broad reach etc)
