4 Flashcards
(8 cards)
Boyle’s law
Pressure is inversely related to volume
Purposes of respiratory system
Exchange of gases - occurs through ventilation and diffusion
Maintenance of acid/base balance
Two forms of respiration
Pulmonary respiration - ventilation and O2/CO2 exchange
Cellular respiration - O2 used CO2 produced
Muscles of ventilation during exercise
Expiration - internal intercostal muscles
Inspiration - scalenes and external intercostal muscles
Minute ventilation
Amount of air moved in or out of the lungs per minute.
V = (frequency)(tidal volume)
Spirometry
Measurement of pulmonary volumes and rate of expired airflow
Airflow =
Difference in pressure of airway/resistance
Ventilatory threshold
Point at which ventilation starts to increase at a faster rate than VO2. About the same as lactate threshold.
