Why economic regenration is needed in some places more than others(3)
Regenration is needed t stop the brain drain of talented young people from the region, attract visitors across all seasons to provide more secure employment opportunities and boost investment in the region by increasing its national presence e.g gov is investing more into British countrysides like, Cornwall
Explain why infrastructure investment such as fracking may help regenration in some local economies but not others. (6)
UK GOV policy can give permission to fracking in areas most likely to benefit from econmic regenration.
E.g. fracking jobs can bring new opportunities to rural areas where brisitsh shale gas and oil deposits primarily lie. An industry review in 2014 predicted that fracking can generate 60,000 new jobs. Therefore, fracking could benefit local economies in areas suffering from unemployment or low earnings as it brings over a new source of income and jobs.
Fracking may not benefit others as it comes with huge environmental risks as it can cause water contamination and a loss of biodiversity. E.g. in the USA, toxic fracking water was released in Pennsylvania which posed significant health risks if drank and in the UK, 188 wildlife trust nature reserves were licensed by the gov, which meant that it can damage animal habitats if fracked on
Explain why regenration usually improves people’s living environment (6)
Improvement in living environemnt is often part of top-down strategies, to encourage visitors and rebrand the image of the place.
E.g. startford’s olymic stadium rebranded the image of east London, with them being known for having high unemployment and deprivation in the past, however, after successful regenration the place was known to be a tourist hotspot and econmic hub, with the regeneration project creating over 100,000 jobs
Improvements in air quality can improve public health. For example, Bristols life expectancy improved to an average of 80yrs after metro mayor employed metro buses to combat air pollution. Reducing the amount of respiratory diseases created which meant less spending on healthcare and more investment into other public services
