What is Bhakti yoga
The path of loving devotion towards a chosen deity as a means of achieving moksha in which you fix your mind with complete surrender on a chosen God.
What is brahmacharya
The first life stage/ashrama according to Hinduism; the student stage.
What is cremation
Burning the dead body to release the soul. The final Hindu samskar/Hindu death ritual.
What is grihastha
The second ashrama/stage in life; the householder stage.
What is jnana yoga
The path of knowledge as a means of achieving moksha -it’s one of the recognised paths to liberation.
What is karma yoga
A path of good deeds (like Gandhi, the ideal karma yogi) performed with an attitude of selflessness as a means of reaching moksha.
What is mandir
A Hindu place of worship/temple.
What is samskars
Special rituals which bring into being or mark a new stage in life.
What is sannyasa
The fourth and final life stage/ashrama when one becomes a wandering holy man.
What is shraddha
A memorial ceremony for the dead in which offerings of food are made to the poor in the memory of ancestors. It is a period of mourning for the dead.
What is Vanaprastha
The third stage of life/ashrama sometimes involving retirement to the woods. It involves withdrawing from the duties of a householder to the forest.
What is ashramas
The four stages of life; brahmacharya, grihastha, vanaprastha and sannyasa.
