What are SECURE attachments

A
  • In a secure attachment, theres a strong bond between child & caregiver.
  • If theyre separated, infant becomes distressed. HOWEVER when theyre reunited, the child is easily comforted by caregiver.
  • The majority of attachments are of this type. Secure attachments are associated w a healthy cognitive & emotional development.

  • The bond between child & caregiver is weaker.
  • Ainsworth et al. came up w 2 types of insecure attachment:
    • Insecure-avoidant
    • Insecure-resistant

What are Insecure-avoidant attachments

A
  • If child is separated from caregiver, they DONT become particularly distressed, & can usually be comforted by a stranger.
  • This type of INSECURE attachment is shown by children who generally avoid social interaction & intimacy w others.

A
  • Child is often uneasy around caregiver, but becomes upset if theyre separated.
  • Comfort cant be given by strangers, & its also often resisted from the caregiver.
  • Children who show this style of attachment both accept & reject social interaction & intimacy.
