New York Flashcards

1
Q

New York basics

A
  • New York is the second largest producer of wine in the US, but Vitis vinifera grapes currently account for less than one third of the state’s vineyards.
  • In the wake of Dr. Konstantin Frank’s successful cultivation of vinifera grapes in the early 1960s, new plantings of European varieties have greatly increased.

Q

Finger Lakes

A
  • 90% of New York’s wine is produced.
  • In the Finger Lakes, Niagara Escarpment and Lake Erie AVAs, the extremes of cold temperature are mitigated by water: the lake effect of the Great Lakes lowers the chance of damaging winter freezes and promotes a late budbreak, lessening the dangers of spring frost.

Q

Finger Lakes grapes

A
  • Riesling performs especially well
  • Pinot Noir plantings are showing promise. Niagara, an American cross of Concord and Cassady, still has a large following in the Finger Lakes.
  • Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, and Gewürztraminer perform well throughout the state.
