Chapter 2 Flashcards

1
Q

Can a object have a varying speed if it’s velocity is constant yes or no and give examples

A

No because if the speed changes in magnitude then velocity will also change for example if a cars speed increases by 50m/s to 70m/s the displacement for the velocity is 20 m/s showing that velocity changes if speed changes

Q

Can an object have a varying velocity if the speed is constant yes or no and give examples

A

Yes be had the speed and displacement for velocity could remain constant but if the direction changes it will change velocity for example if a car is going at a constant 20 m/s but it turns right then the vilify changes from 20 m/s north to 20 m/s east while the speed is constant

3
Q

If one object has a greater speed than the second object does the first have a greater acceleration explain and give example

A

No because the first car could have a velocity of 50m/s and have an acceleration of 1 m/s/s while the second car could have a velocity of 45 m/s with and acceleration of 10 m/s/s in which in this case the second car has a greater acceleration

Q

Compare the acceleration of a motorcycle that accelerates 80m/s to 90m/s with the acceleration of a bicycle that accelerates from rest to 10m/s in the same time

A

The acceleration of both the motorcycle and bicycle have the same because the velocity displacement of 10m/s

Q

Can the velocity of an object be negative when it’s acceleration is positive what about vice versa

A

Yes becuase if a car is going west the velocity is negative but if the velocity increases then the acceleration is positive, yes becuase it would be decelerating if a car was going east

6
Q

Can the object have the northward velocity and a southward acceleration what about vice versa

A

Yes because if a pencil is thrown into the air the velocity is pushing it up while the acceleration pushes it down in the form of the gravitational pull and eventually the pull will be stronger than the velocity making the pencil come back down, yes becuase if I push a ball underwater the velocity is me pushing it and the acceleration is pushing it up

Q

What is the difference between distance and displacement and how do they relate to speed and velocity

A

Distance is how far an object has traveled and displacement is the change in position of the object. Distance applies to speed as the total distance traveled over a specific time frame and displacement applies to velocity as the change in velocity over a specific time frame where speed is scalar and velocity is vector.

8
Q

Explain how the same trip such as a 3 mile run from your front door to your front door could have an average speed but a zero average velocity

A

it has an average displacement of velocity is zero because it is final minus initial, it would have a total distance of 6 miles because speed is the total distance traveled

Q

Explain what acceleration is and give good examples of accelerated motion

A

Acceleration is the rate of change in velocity divided by the time taken to make this change for example car speeding up, slowing down, turning even if the velocity is constant or not

10
Q

Can an object have zero acceleration and nonzero velocity at the same time give examples

A

Yes if the velocity is constant the acceleration is zero for example anything at a constant velocity like a car or ball

Q

Does a car speedometer measure speed velocity or Both and why

A

It measures speed because it’s the distance or how far the car has traveled in a specific time frame whereas velocity is the displacement and direction rather than the total distance in a specific time frame , and a speedometer doesn’t measure direction
