4.2 Study Guide Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is helicase?
An enzyme used in DNA replication.
What does Helicase do?
Break the hydrogen bonds that allow the parental strands to be together.
How do DNA strands grow?
DNA strands grow 5 prime to 3 prime.
What is a leading strand?
continuous.
What is a lagging strand?
Discontinuous.
What are the portions of the lagging strand called?
Okazaki fragments
What group is attached to the 3 prime?
Hydroxyl group
What group is attached to the 5 prime?
Phosphate group
What is DNA Polymerase and what does it do?
An enzyme that catalyzes the synsthesis of DNA by adding nucleotides to pre-existing chain.
What does primase do?
Adds RNA primers.
What does DNA Polymerase 3 do?
Its adds complimentary base pairs to build DNA molecules.
What does DNA Polymerase 1 do?
Removes the RNA primers and replaces with DNA molecules.
