What is meant when we talk about Emancipated Identity

A

The belief that you are EMANCIPATED from your parents and significant others. You feel a sense of self-value even when your ideals and values differ from those close to you. Basically, you have enough self-esteem to be your own person. As you age, the child’s peer groups takes on a larger in facilitating emancipation than the parents.

What is the role of the parent in helping the adolescent form their emancipated identity

  1. They should be consistent in expressing their values and standards (don’t be a hypocrite)
  2. Parents should tolerate the teenagers independence but don’t criticize them when they express dependence (compassionate>asshole)

During adolescence, what happens in terms of sexual identity development

A
  1. Physical development during puberty stimulates closeness with the opposite sexed parent which freaks the kid out and causes avoidance
  2. The Oedipally related sexual fantasies need to be defended against until they are stopped. Done by getting a crush on a opposite sexed celeb or arguing with the parent a lot
  3. In heterosexual adolescences the bond with the same-sexed parent becomes stronger
  4. Teen wants to get mirror smile from parents as a sexually attractive person
  5. Parents need to keep sexual stimulation very low in the house and social life
