Republicanism and the radical Whigs

A

Republicanism-society as one in which all citizens willingly support the common good(ideal democracy)
Radical Whigs- British political commentators, thought monarchy was threat to liberty

Grenville’s Acts

A

Sugar Act, Quartering Act, and Stamp Act. Raised taxes in the colonies, and required some colonies to provide food and shelter for British troops. Also introduced Admiralty courts(trial without jury).

Stamp Act Congress

A

27 delegates drew up a statement of their rights and grievances and asked the kings to repeal the legislation. Basically ignored by England.

A

Colonial groups that took the law into their own hands and violently protested The Stamp Acts.

s-Showed violence works, as the acts were taken away in 1765.

Townshend Acts

A

Duty(money paid to import) on glass, white lead, paper, paint, and tea.

s-Colonists dislikes this, especially the Tea duty. lead to the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party.

Committees of Correspondence

A

Local governments(usually by town) that communicate with other groups to make a difference. First one started in Boston by Samuel Adams. Exchanged letters and spread the word

s-Spread resistance, kept opposition on Britain alive

Intolerable Act

A

Actual Name “Boston Port Act”. closed tea-stained harbor until damages were paid and/or order could be ensured. Also required Bostonians to lodge soldiers.

s-Final Straw for colonists before the war.

First Continental Congress

A

12/13 colonies (5 men) met to address colonial grievances and tried to convince Britain to repeal the Intolerable acts. Didn’t want new country. just to go back to salutary neglect.

s-precursor to Congress, got colonies to all work together
