A

Onset typical URI symptoms (cough, low grade fever, rhinorrhea) hoarse voice, stridor with coughing or crying, classic barky cough, retractions

A

Developmental disorder of airway. Cartilaginous structures of larynx and or trachea too soft and collapse with inspiration

What is the treatment for croup?

A

Observation with mild illness/older child/ Oral dexamethasone single dose or prednisolone several doses. Racemic epinephrine for respiratory distress

Why should epinephrine and steroid be given together in ER?

A

Possible rebound since epinephrine wears off in 60-90 mins. May need to repeat every 30-60 mins until steroid kicks in.
