Cancer Biology Flashcards
Sarcoma
Cancer that begins in supportive or connective tissues such as muscle, bone, fat, and blood vessels.
Carcinoma
Cancer that begins in skin or tissues that line or cover internal organs.
Lymphoma/Myeloma
Cancer that begins in cells of the immune system.
Oncogenes
Mutations that occur in genes that induce increased activity.
Tumor Suppressor Genes
Cause inactivations of genes that control cellular activity.
Apoptosis
Cell death.
Angiogenesis
Tumors develop the ability to form new blood vessels. This causes cells to be self-sufficient and spread.
Cancer Invasion
Direct penetration into neighboring tissues.
Cancer Metastasis
Penetration into lymphatic and blood vessels leading to distant spread and eventual seeding in distant sites.
Somatic
Occur in individual cells.
