Q

what is the second explanation to Job’s suffering?

A

Suffering is a punishment for sin: theodicy (solution) to the Inconsistent Triad
Job must have sinned greatly to suffer so much
his friends encourage him to search his life for unfocused sins and to repent
Job protests that he has always been good and faithful
God eventually speaks and accuses the friends of being wrong-minded, rejecting their idea - he presents explanation 3

Q

what is the third explanation to Job’s suffering?

Suffering is part of God’s plan, which is beyond human understanding

Q

Why does God not prevent evil and suffering? The balance of nature

A

the world is balanced
everything is intricately related
natural processes can produce good and bad effects
floods kill people but also waters land which allows others to live
earthquakes which destroy cities and can cause tsunamis are caused by the same forces that created the land on which we are able to live
natural processes are not ‘acts of God’ they are acts of nature which God allows to happen

Q

Why does God not intervene with nature?

A

God sets the world going then leaves it to its natural course
God should not intervene; this would disrupt the laws of nature
how could God chose between the suffering of one group and the well being of the other?

Q

Why does God not prevent evil and suffering?

The suffering of Jesus

A

Jesus, as a man, suffered greatly
suffering is part of being human
he was executed in an excruciatingly painful way; crucifixion
just before he died he shouted: “My God, my God, why did you abandon me?” (Mark 15:34)
he also said: “It’s is accomplished!” (John 19:30)
suggests that his suffering had a purpose

Q

Why does God not prevent evil and suffering?

Free will

A

Christians believe God gives us free will
to live life as we choose
God does not interfere every time people cause harm as this would make people God’s puppets
God has shown us how to live
our connection/love is stronger with God if we chose him
humans decide whether to follow God’s instructions
humans take the consequences of their decisions
leads to human evil
we are made in God’s image but it is our free will and our choice to become like him

Q

Why does free will lead to human evil?

Original sin

A

Genesis 3 begins with the story of the first sin
“the fall” of Adam and Eve introduced sin into the world
before there was no sin, it was all good in the Garden of Eden
we are all seminally present in the loins of Adam and we all bare the same sin and this is why evil exists
people are born with a tendency towards evil
humans are usually attracted to do wrong when given the choice between good and evil

Q

Why does free will lead to human evil?

Satan

A

some people see evil as the work of Satan
Satan appears at various times through the Bible as the opposite of God
appears as a snake; tempts Eve to eat the apple
Satan tests Job
Satan tempts Jesus to abandon his ministry
some Christians’ lives resolves around ‘resisting Satan’: ban music of rock groups whose lyrics supposedly include Satanic ideas, hold exorcisms to rid people of Satanic influence

Q

Why does free will lead to human evil?

Absence of Good

A

in the fourth century St. Augustine compared evil to human disease
health is the basic state of human bodies, good is the basic state of human experience
disease is the absence of health (didn’t know about viruses and germs)
evil is the absence of good
when the body gets better disease disappears (does not transfer to another part of the body) and health returns
when good is activated evil disappears
evil is the absence of good in one particular part of the human experience
if enough people do good, they could remove evil entirely
a modern writer puts it like this: “All that is needed for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing.”

16
Q

what does David Hume call the Inconsistent Triad? explain

A

the “Rock of Atheism” - the foundation

one of the most convincing arguments

17
Q

explain the Inconsistent Triad theory

A

God is omni-benevolent - he should want to stop evil
God is omni-potent - he should be able to stop evil
evil exists: we know evil exists because we see it everyday
either God doesn’t exist or God is not the God of the Classical Theist Interpretation

18
Q

what are some further points (3) on why evil exists?

A

St Irenaeus: character building - we become stronger after experiencing evil/bad
Nietzsche: God is dead, he does not exist anymore
Heaven = compensation for being good

19
Q

breakdown evil and suffering and how it can disprove the existence of God

A

God is said to be omni-benevolent, omniscient and omnipotent
if God is omni-benevolent he would want to remove evil and suffering
if God is omniscient he would know how to remove evil and suffering
if God is omnipotent he would be able to remove evil and suffering
therefore, both God and evil cannot exist
evil and suffering do exist
therefore, God cannot exist as the God of the Classical Theist Interpretation

20
Q

what is the religious defence against the problems of evil and suffering?

A

there are two kinds of evil:
moral evil — suffering caused by human beings doing wrong things, e.g. murder
natural evil — suffering caused by nature itself, e.g. earthquakes

21
Q

explain the Free Will Defense

A

God has given human beings the free will to do as they wish and God cannot interfere. Evil and suffering are caused by humans not God

22
Q

explain the idea that evil and suffering is preparing believers for heaven

A

God allows evil and suffering to prepare believers for heaven. Bad things happen so that good can result and believers can become more like Jesus, for instance, if there were no poor people, then believers could not give to charity. Moreover, in heaven all evil and suffering will cease

23
Q

explain the idea that evil and suffering is because God works in mysterious ways

A

we cannot understand God’s reasons. For some Christians, the answer is that they don’t know why there is suffering but that they should trust God’s love — even Jesus had to suffer. God works with a final plan in view, which is all good and all loving

24
Q

what is a quote to support the idea that evil and suffering is because God works in mysterious ways

A

“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying, or pain…” (Revelation 21:4)

25
Q

explain the idea that evil and suffering is because of the Original Sin

A

one of the oldest Christian responses is based on the accounts of creation and the Fall in Genesis 1-3. These accounts suggest that God created the world and human beings perfectly and that he gave humans free will. The first humans, Adam and Eve, chose to use their free will to disobey the command God gave them not to eat the fruit of the free of the knowledge of good and evil. When they did eat it, sin and suffering were brought into the world by their freely chosen actions

26
Q

what is the main Christian response to suffering?

A

to help those in need, either by intercession and/or helping and serving others by doing voluntary work and giving to charity
