Q

What are the four main kinds of stunning?

A

Electrical

Captive bolt

Q

What is the source of energy in a captive bold gun?

A

Compressed air or cartridges.

Legally all abattoirs have to have a back up slaughter method

Captive bolt = immediate and irreversible stunning if done correctly

16
Q

Where should you stand to shoot an animal?

A

From the side and above. Gun should be in contact with head

Good maintenace essential

17
Q

Why is captive bolt not a good idea in big animals like water buffalo?

A

Very thick bone!

18
Q

Where should the probes be placed in electrical stunning?

A

Across the brain. Used a lot for pigs and cattle

19
Q

How does head only electrical stunning work?

A

causes rapid depolarisation of the membrane potentials in the brain –> synchronized activity. Like v extreme version of epilepsy.

May recover if not killed quickly

20
Q

Why might you use head and body stunner?

A

Causes cardiac arrest - stunning and death

May use water to increase electrical activity

21
Q

What is the minimum recommended current for stunning pigs?

A

1.30 amps

>250 volts

22
Q

What is the minimum recommended current for stunning sheep?

A

1.00 amps

200 volts

23
Q

What is the minimum recommended current for stunning calves?

A

1.25 amps

250 volts

24
Q

What is the minimum recommended current for stunning cattle?

A

1.28 amps

250 volts

25
Q

When might stunning be less efficient?

A

Stunner placed behind the ears

wooly/dry skin

26
Q

How long does unconsciouness generally last in most animals?

A

60-70 seconds

Fastest cases less than 40 seconds

Must therefore be bled promptly

27
Q

How long does it take between sticking and brain death?

A

14 seconds. Need to factor this in to stun time so brain dead by the time stun wears off

28
Q

How long does it take for brain death to occur after electrically induced cardiac arrest?

A

28 seconds

29
Q

Which arteries are the most important to get in sticking?

A

Carotids

NB cows also have supply from vertebral artery to circle of willis so will take longer

30
Q

How long does it take to loose consciousness if you just cut the jugulars?

A

5 minutes!!
