Reasons for no settlement in 1647?
- Charles was aware of his enemies divisions and believed he could exploit them
- Knew radicalism would fear the gentry and he was the stable choice
- Knew Scots were on his side more than Parliaments

- Met with Yorkshire troops
- This delay meant that Cromwell hadn’t finished putting down the unrest in Wales and came north
- Caught on the 17th and was defeated within 2 days
