Why is cracking carried out?

A

Long-chain hydrocarbons from thick gloopy liquids like tar which aren’t very useful. For this reason we carry out cracking so that the long molecules produced from distillation turn into smaller ones which are used for many different purposes.

A

By adding the substance to bromine water.
An alkene will decolourise the bromine water, turning it from orange to colourless. This is because the double double bond has opened up and formed bonds with the bromine.
