Chapter 8 Flashcards
Centromere
Cell structure that joins to sister chromatids to the chromosomes
Telophase
Final phase of mitosis during which a new cells prepare for their own independent existence
Spindle
Cell structures composed of microtubule fibers
Metaphase
Short second phase of mitosis where double chromosomes move to the equator of the spindle and chromatids are attached by chromatin separate spindle fibers
Organ
Group of two or more tissues organized to perform complex activities within an organism
Gene
Segment of DNA that controls the protein production in the cell cycle
Anaphase
Phase of mitosis where the chromosomes split and the chromatid pairs of each chromosomes are pulled apart by microtubules
Organ system
Multiple organs that work together to perform a specific life function
Osmosis
Diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane
Passive transport
Movement of particles across cell membranes by diffusion or osmosis
Exocytosis
Active transport process by which materials are secreted or spelled from a cell
Interphase
Cell growth phase where difference in size, carries for metabolism, and duplicates chromosomes prior to division
cancer
Uncontrollable cell division
That might be caused by environmental factors and or change in enzyme production in the cell cycle
