Major = rotavirus and norovirus Minor = adeno and astrovirus

Classification for Rotavirus DNA/RNA Capsid shape Enveloped? SS or DS Family
RNA Icosahedral, double capsid! not enveloped DS, segmented! (only DS RNA virus!) Reoviridae (other one in this class is coltavirus)
How to make a Definitive Diagnosis for rotavirus
Elisa of stool sample
Can do electron microscopy
RT-PCR for genotype of virus
What is ISVP?
Intermediate sub-viral particle
The virus is activated by stomach acid. After activation it’s called an ISVP
How does rotavirus cause a shit load of shit? Specifically, watery diarrhea.
It makes a toxin call NSP4 - spills cellular contents into lumen –> decreased Na and K absorption –> watery diarrhea
Classification of Norovirus DNA/RNA Capsid shape Enveloped? SS or DS Family
RNA Icosahedral non-enveloped SS+ (class for) Calciviridae
You eat Chipotle. You get diarrhea 2 days later and lots of other people do too. What virus could that have been?
Norovirus. You only need to ingest 10 to be infected.
You have norovirus. What are your symptoms? How long?
General sick - diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, nausea, headache, fever. lasts like 2-3 days, but you are infectious for up to 2 weeks
What situations are norovirus common?
Fast food (chipotle) Cruise ships (think cruise shops don't have to be rowed, No Row = noro)
You devour a burrito and get sick like that day. What caused it?
Probably Bacillus Cereus (the one that’s associated with rice) becuase the symptoms were so soon. Norovirus presents at least a day later

DNA Icosahedral non-enveloped DS DNA, linear (class I) Adenoviridae
Definitive diagnosis for Adenovidus:
Frickin’ ELISA or PCR again
Preventing Adenovirus infection:
warsh yo hands
chlorinate swimming pools
Military gets immunized for strains 4 and 7.
