4.8 Consequences of uses of computing Flashcards
(19 cards)
What are the 4 issues regarding uses of computers
- Moral
- Ethical
- Legal
- Cultural
What do moral issues correspond to
Individual thoughts
What do ethical issues correspond to
Social thoughts
What is the main results of the development of computer usage
The ability to:
- Monitor behaviour
- Gather and analyse personal information
- Distribute and publish personal information
What are some examples of personal information
- Identification (Name, DOB)
- Communications (Phone number and email address)
- Finances (Bank Account Info…)
Explain what causes the misuse of personal data
Some software needs to use personal information to work properly, but this can lead to it being misused
What are the Legal issues due to the misuse of personal data
- ToS’s must be clear otherwise users may not be aware they ae consenting to the breach of their personal data.
- GDPR: Personal Data is often sold to other organisations
What are the ethical issues due to the misuse of personal data
- Even if users consent how are we sure that their data online is safe from the unauthorised
- How are we sure that it is being used got its desired purpose only
- Big Brother Effect, where individuals feel the government use the data to monitor users
What are the moral issues due to the misuse of personal data
- Companies may accumulate data to profile users, which if breached can have a negative impact on the individual
- Everything we do on the internet stays there for a long time, some may be sceptical, that others may find it in the future
What are 2 general moral issues with usage of computers
- Unauthorised access where hackers gain access to data
- Some people believe that software is difficult to make and so is valuable and morally defendable to download long term
What are moral issues to do with apps that have a social aspect
- Peoples behaviour change online, which can lead to cyber bullying
- Inappropriate content is shared on the internet which can negatively affect children
- However some feel due to freedom of speech you should be able to say and show what you want
What are some legal limitations companies face
- Technology and therefore tech related legislations are always changing and so company also has to often update their actions
- Laws are unique to the UK in most cases meaning theres no universal way to police computer use especially internationally
What are the 4 main Laws linking to computer use
- Data Protection Act
- Computer Misuse Act
- Regulations of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA)
- Copyrights, Designs and Patents Act
Explain the principle of the data protection act
about how data is handled
- Processed fairly and lawfully
- Kept securely and accurately
- kept only as long as necessary
- not transferrred to countries without data protection
- Available to the user
Explain the principle of the computer misuse act
It makes illegal:
- Hacking
- Intention of illegal activity after having breached software
- unauthorised modification of computer material
Explain the principle of the RIPA
Companies must abide by RIPA, as its an act that makes clear what they can and cant monitor by making what they do available to the public. Thsi is because people are sceptical of the police being able to intercept encrypted data if there is criminal suspicion
Explain the principles of Copyright act
Gives creators rights and control over their content. The law covers the
copying, adapting and renting of materials.
What are some cultural issues regarding computer misuse
- Over reliance on computers
- Over reliance on remote data
- Invasive technologies w/o consent
- Big Brother causing distrust in government
- Globalisation means we are influenced by the thoughts of other cultures
What is the legal problem with globalisation
Globalisation means we are more connected to ther parts of the world and so laws here may not be enough to ensure security
