Q

Gout

A

chronic disorder of uric acid metabolism, manifests as an acute form of arthritis
overproduction or decreased excretion of uric acids and urate salts, high levels of uric acid in the blood, leading to joint deformity
most common in the great toe, in men after puberty, inherited
treatment = bed rest, immobilization, cold packs, anti inflammatory agent

Q

Paget’s disease

A

chronic bone disorder that results in enlarged, deformed bones due to irregular breakdown and formation of bone tissue
vascular stage = bone tissue broken down, spaces filled with blood vessels
sclerotic stage = vascular tissue hardens but is fragile, leading to fractures
treatment = with symptoms, use calcitonin, high-protein, high-calcium, vitamin D diet, anti inflammatory drugs

Q

Marfan’s syndrome

A

inherited conditions weak weakness of blood vessels
tall and slender with long narrow digits, may have scoliosis
autosomal dominant genetic disorder
treatment = hormones for height, echocardiograms, controlling blood pressure

Q

Bone tumors

A

abnormal growth in the bone (chondrogenic, osteogenic, fibrogenic)
pain at night or with exercise, anemia, pathologic fractures occur
more common in males, generally during growth
treatment = surgical excision, bone grafting, may require amputation

Q

Muscle tumors

A

benign or malignant, most common at extremities, head and neck, trunk, and retroperitoneum
painless lump, then pain and tenderness
occur mostly over the age of 50
treatment = surgical resection, radiation therapy

A

loss of normal bone density, porous bone
most often in women after menopause, spontaneous fractures

Q

Osteomalacia and rickets

A

disease characterized by defective mineralization of bones, resulting from deficiency of vitamin D
bones are soft, flexible and deformed, bowing of the legs may occur
children = rickets, adults = osteomalacia
treatment = vitamin D supplements, calcium, calcitonin

16
Q

Hallux valgus

A

bunion, enlargement of the inner portion of the metatarsophalangeal joint
caused by flatfoot, improperly fitted heels, ballet dancers
treatment = shoes with room, ice, rest, aspirin for pain

17
Q

Hallux rigidus

A

stiff, swollen, big toe that results of degeneration of cartilage
occurs as a result of injury or underlying arthritis
treatment = drug therapy, shoes with hard soles, surgical intervention

18
Q

Hammer toe

A

toe bends upwards like a claw due to abnormal flexion, most often in the second toe, can lead to the formation of a corn
can be a result of underlying arthritis, or bad shoes
treatment = switching shoes, splinting, exercises

19
Q

Fractures

A

caused by stress on bone resulting from traumatic insult
can occur in any bone of the body, different types of fractures possible
discoloration, inability to move, deformity
treatment = immobilization, splinting, internal fixation

20
Q

Strains and sprains

A

strain = injured tendon, muscle or other tissue from overuse or overstretching
sprain = acute partial tear of a ligament, classified as 1st, 2nd, or 3rd
acute injuries or from chronic overuse, may include damaged blood vessels
treatment = rest, ice, immobilization, surgery for large tears

21
Q

Dislocations

A

forcible displacement of bone from its joint
joint is misshapen, extremely painful and immovable
caused by severe injury, congenital weakness of joints
treatment = repositioning of joint, surgery

22
Q

Adhesive capsulitis

A

shoulder is significantly limited in range of motion due to inflammation
normal movement is impossible, symptoms become gradually worse
due to bursitis or tendonitis
treatment = keep in motion, analgesics, antiinflammatory agents

23
Q

Severed tendon

A

long fibrous cord is torn into two sections preventing muscle from performing its function
immediate, severe pain, inflammation, immobility
due to injury or laceration of forearm, hand, calf, or foot
treatment = surgery (tenorrhaphy), physical therapy

24
Q

Shin splints

A

inflammation of periosteum of muscles in lower leg and surrounding tissues
inflammation, pain, edema, tenderness
most often during new exercise program, or increase in amount of exercise
due to overuse and overpronation, improper conditioning
treatment = rest, ice, heat, aspirin

25
Q

Plantar fasciitis

A

inflammatory response at the bottom of the heel bone
common in runners, dull, intermittent pain
flat feet, toe running, poor shoe support, age, weight increase are factors
treatment = rest, ice, anti inflammatory agents, physical therapy

26
Q

Ganglion

A

benign cyst formed from the tissue that lines a joint or tendon
most common on the back of the wrist, may appear in clusters
caused by repetitive minor injuries, sign of arthritis
treatment = unnecessary if no pain, surgical incision, ruptures

27
Q

Torn meniscus

A

semilunar cartilage in knee joint
acute knee pain, snapping or clicking sounds
generally related to sports injuries, soccer, baseball, football with twisting
treatment = immobilization, ice, rest, antiinflammatories

28
Q

Rotator cuff tears

A

tears in any four of the rotator cuff tendons limits function of shoulder
produce immediate snapping sound and acute pain
range of motion is limited, calcium deposits may develop
caused by acute trauma, steroid injections, age
treatment = narcotic medication, rest, therapy, surgery
