What is a Phobia?

A

A definite, persistent fear of a particular object or situation. A stimulus e.g.. a spider, will provoke an immediate response which may be similar to a panic attack.

A

Despite the fact the individual knows their fear is irrational they still cannot stop the feeling of terror.

the fear must disrupt the individuals day to day life for the disorder to be diagnosed.

  • marked and persistent fear that is excessive or unreasonable.
  • exposure to phobic stimulus provokes immediate anxiety response
  • the person recognises the fear as excessive
  • the phobic situation is avoided

  • the phobia has lasted more than 6 months in people under the age of 18 yrs
