Anatomy L07 Overview of the Nervous System 2 Flashcards
In terms of the nervous system, what is a nucleus and in where are they located?
A group of neuron bodies located within the CNS
What is the difference between a nucleus and a ganglion?
Nuclei are located in the CNS and ganglia are located in the PNS
What are tracts?
A bundle of functionally similar fibres within the CNS that carry information between different areas of the nervous system
Sympathetic and parasympathetic stimulation often produces opposing effects on the same organ. Give an example.
heart (sympathetic increases heart rate BUT parasympathetic reduces heart rate)
Which division of the ANS has their ganglion CLOSE to the spinal cord?
sympathetic nervous system
Which effector body part is innervated by the sympathetic system but is activated by acetylcholine from the postganglionic neurons?
sweat glands
Which fibre is myelinated in the ANS, the preganglionic or postganglionic?
preganglionic
Which two divisions of the spinal segments correspond to the sympathetic nervous system?
Thoracic and lumbar
In the ANS, what neurotransmitter is released from ALL preganglionic neurons?
Acetylcholine
Which three factors stimulate the ANS afferent system as sensations?
pressure, stretch, ischaemia
Do abdominal organs have sympathetic or parasympathetic ganglia?
Mixed
What is the typical difference between Parasympathetic and sympathetic primary neurotransmitters?
The parasympathetic primary neurotransmitter is primarily cholinergic while the sympathetic is adrenergic i.e. acetylcholine vs. epinephrine and norepinephrine
