Q

How are body systems formed?

A

Cells are specialised to do different jobs, these cells form groups called tissues, these groups of tissues form organs, which form body systems.

Q

How does an embryo form and develop?

A

A fertilised egg cell divides my mitosis to form an embryo, at the 8 cell stage all the cells are identical embryonic stem cells. After this they begin specialising into different kinds of tissue cells. Some cells will remain unspecialised (adult stem cells) and specialise later on into only certain types of tissue.

Q

How do plants cells specialise?

A

In plants, only special regions called meristems are unspecialised and can develop into any kind of plant cell (xylem and phloem in any organ).

Q

What else does the presence of meristems in plants allow to happen?

A

The presence of meristems allows the production of a clone of a plant from cuttings. This cutting can develop into a whole new plant with rooting promoted by the presence of plant hormones (auxins)

Q

What is phototropism?

A

Phototropism is the growth of a plant towards sunlight, it is an example of how a plants growth and development can be affected by the environment. When the sunlight hits a certain part of a plant, the shaded area will begin to grow due to the production of auxin in this area. It will then bend and grow towards the light.
