Organisms producing new cells Flashcards

1
Q

What are the two ways cells produce more of themselves?

A

Mitosis and meiosis. Mitosis occurs in all normal cells where the chromosome copies itself in the nucleus and then splits in two.
Meiosis occurs in sex cells, the chromosomes in the nucleus copy themselves then split and split again.

Q

Why does meiosis create cells with only half the number of chromosomes in a normal cell in?

A

Meiosis is the production of gametes and they only have half the chromosomes so that when two gametes combine to form a fertilised egg it doesn’t have double the amount of chromosomes as normal, but a set from each parent.
