16
Q

What two metals are unlikely to react with oxygen?

A

Gold

Silver

17
Q

What protects fruit from an oxygen attack?

A

Their skin/peel

18
Q

What speeds up the rusting process? (Catalyst)

A

Water

19
Q

Why is rusting a bad thing?

A

It weakens iron and steel, which are used as supports for buildings, cars etc.

20
Q

What way can the rusting process be sped up even more?

A

Impurities (like salt) can be mixed in the water being used as the catalyst

21
Q

Why are metals like aluminium and chromium being used more often?

A

They are not damaged by oxygen attacks.

22
Q

How are aluminium and chromium protected?

A

The oxides of these metals form a layer (patina) around the metal, protecting the rest of the metal from the Oxygen

23
Q

What three methods can be used to protect iron from rusting?

A

Painting/greasing/oiling
Electroplating
Galvanising

24
Q

What is electroplating?

A

A negative current is sent through a plate of iron. The charged plate is then dipped into a bath of aluminium/chromium/ gold etc. These metals are attracted to the negatively charged iron, and so they coat the iron.

25
Q

What is galvanising?

A

When an iron plate is dipped into a bath of zinc

26
Q

Why does galvanising work?

A

Zinc oxide will form an extra layer around the zinc and zinc oxide, protecting both metals

27
Q

What colour is copper naturally?

A

Orange

28
Q

What flame is produced during the reaction between iron and oxygen in the presence of heat?

A

Orange sparks

29
Q

What is a patina?

A

A layer of metal oxide that forms on the metal

30
Q

What happens to water when it boils?

A

Oxygen gas is evaporated

The water is less likely to cause lots of rust

31
Q

What compound absorbs moisture?

A

Calcium chloride
