Fluoride (F) Flashcards

1
Q

True/False: Factors that promote gastric acid secretion decreases the absorption rate of F.

A

False. F absorption is inversely related to pH. So factors that promote gastric acid secretions increases F absorption rate, and factors that inhibit gastric acid secretions decreases F absorption.

Q

What are the biochemical functions of F?

A
  1. To protect calcified tissues against pathological demineralization by forming fluorapatite crystals rather than the usual hydroxyapatite crystals.
  2. Important for minimizing the risk of developing dental caries.
  3. Stimulation of new bone by stimulating osteoblasts and may reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

Q

What are the DRI and sources of F?

A
  1. 3/3mg/d for 14-18 M/F and 4/3mg/d for all other groups M/F.
  2. Sources are toothpaste, fluoridated water, tea, seaweed, dental treatments.
