problems in small animal and equine practice?

A

Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Staphylococcus aureus/pseudintermedius

Escherichia coli ESBL Both pets and horses

N.B. All these bacteria are resistant to β-lactams and often additionally resistant to fluoroquinolones

2
Q

Pseudomonas aeruginosa

hvilke dyr og ab?

A

Fluoroquinolones and aminoglycosides

Mainly dogs

3
Q

Staphylococcus aureus/pseudintermedius
MRSA/MRSP
hvilke dyr?

A

MRSA/MRSP

Both pets and horses

4
Q

What are the treatment options for infections

caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria?

A
  1. Whenever possible, use topical treatment
    • Shampo and antiseptic products
    • Fusidic acid (otitis and localized pyoderma)
  2. Systemic therapy is necessarily guided by susceptibility data
  3. Decisions (e.g. therapy vs. euthanasia) should
take into consideration infection type, patient’s
    age, value and conditions
5
Q

Antibiotic options for systemic therapy

• Chloramphenicol - ulemper

A
  • 10-40% resistance
  • Difficult to find and expensive
  • Q8 h (interval)
6
Q

Antibiotic options for systemic therapy

Rifampicin - ulemper

A
  • Only in combination therapy

* Hepatotoxic

7
Q

Antibiotic options for systemic therapy

• Nitrofurantoin - ulemper

A

• Only UTI

8
Q

• Critically important antibiotics (CIAs) used in human hospitals

A
  • Amikacin and carbapenems (ESBL)
  • Linezolid and vancomycin (MRSP)
  • Injectable drugs (inconvenient administration route for small animals)
