1
Q

What is a warm up?

A

Anything and everything that is done to prepare the body before physical exertion to improve performance and prevent injury

Q

What is the benefit of heart rate increasing during a warm up?

A

The heart rate increases blood circulation which redistributes the oxygenated blood to the working muscles.

Q

What happens to the synovial fluid during a warm up?

A

During a warm up, the synovial fluid in the joints becomes less viscous. This enables it become a better lubricant.

Q

What two things allows the muscles elasticity to increase?

A

An increase in core temperature and increase in oxygenated blood to the muscles

Q

What is the difference between being warm and warming up?

A

Being warm does not increase core temperature or improve the circulation of oxygenated blood to the muscles. This means that although you may be warm in temperature, your body is not suitably adapted for exercise.

Q

What happens to the body during pulse raising activity in a warm up? What does it achieve?

A

More oxygen is able to be delivered to the muscles for energy production by the breakdown of ATP.

Q

Define what mobilisation is.

A

When the joints are taken through their full range of movement.

Q

What happens to the body during mobilisation in a warm up? What does this achieve?

A

There is a greater awareness of joint and muscle movements due to improved transmission of feedback messages along the sensory nerves. Synovial fluid becomes less viscous enables full range of movements in the joints.

Q

What happens to the body during stretching in a warm up? What does this achieve?

A

An increase in flexibility through stretching may reduce the risk of musculo-tendinous injuries.

15
Q

What happens to the body during the phase of preparing the mind in a warm up?

A

The mind has time to focus meaning that the dancer can concentrate on the exercises to follow, and if less distracted there is less chance of getting an injury.

16
Q

What happens to the body during dance specific activity?

A

The parts of the body that you are going to be using later in class can start to be mobilised and properly prepared.

17
Q

What is a cool down?

A

Something that allows the systems of the body to gradually cool down towards the resting state.

18
Q

What happens to the body during a cool down?

A

Your heart rate slows, core temperature begins to fall, the joints become remobilised, muscles must be stretched and deoxygenated blood is redistributed.

19
Q

Give some examples of exercises that could be performed in a cool down.

A

Gentle stretching, body and arm swings, light jogging, lunges and rolls through the body.

20
Q

What are the three main benefits of a cool down

A

Reduce the chance of developing D.O.M.S.

21
Q

What other things should a dancer consider at the end of class?

A

Drinking plenty of water, replenishing lost energy by eating and having a warm shower.
