Is Schizophrenia “multiple personality disorder”?
No, the term means split mind not multiple minds
What is schizophrenia?
A psychotic disorder marked by severely distorted perception, altered emotion, disturbed thought as well as disturbed motivation and behaviour.
What does Psychosis mean?
Break from reality
What is the rate of schizophrenia between men and women?
Same same
What is the diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia?
2 of : Delusions, Hallucinations, disorganized speech, disorganized behaviour, negative symptoms- lack of speech, emotion, empathy inappropriate affect.
- Needs to persist 3 weeks of 1 month
What is a delusion and what are the most common ones?
Delusions: are false beliefs that are sustained in the face of evidence that would normally destroy them. Most common are persecution, grandeur, jealousy
What are hallucinations?
False perceptions that seem real. Some sort of perceived stimuli most common is auditory but there is also tactile, visual and smell
What are some negative symptoms?
Negative: absence of specific things
- Motivation, withdraw, apathy, speech (poverty of speech), emotional expression
What is Clang association?
Association of words based on sound(rhyme) or common knowledge (who ya gonna call?) rather than actual concept
What are some types of schizophrenia?
- Catatonia: no movement or too much movement.
- Type 1: cluster of positive symptoms
- Type 2: cluster of negative symptoms
If someone lacks motivation, has poverty of speech, is withdrawn, and is apathetic, what type of schizophrenia might they have?
Type 2: Cluster of negative symptoms
What are the 2 hypothesis in regards to the cause of schizophrenia?
Dopamine hypoth: excessive dopamine in the brain
Neurodegenerative hypoth: loss of brain tissue
Some people believe you may be genetically susceptible to schizophrenia but not have it, why not? What are the suicide rates?
Can have genetic predisposition but it may not be triggered until a stressful event which will bring the onset.
High risk of suicide as 20% attempt and 5-6% succeed.
Which types of symptoms get stronger with schizophrenia as you get older, which does not?
Negative get stronger as you age, positive are less persistent
What are the early warning signs of schizophrenia?
Bad personal hygiene, withdraw, shift in basic personality, laughter during inappropriate times.
