What is an enzyme?
Proteins that act like catalysts for chemical reactions.
What is a substrate?
A molecule that an enzyme reacts with
What is an active site?
The specific region where the substrate and enzyme binds, and where the chemical reaction takes place
What is an Activation energy?
The minimum energy for a reaction to occur
What are the properties of enzymes?
What is the relationship between reaction rate and temperature?
If the temperature is too low, the reaction rate is not high; as the temperature rises, the reaction rate rises. If the temperature gets too high, the enzyme will lose its shape.
How would you maximize enzyme activity?
Increase the temperature to its optimum temperature, and changing the pH to its optimum pH
What is the difference between inhibition and activation?
They both change the shape of the active site, but activation changes the active site to fit the substrate. Inhibition changes the shape not to allow the substrate to fit.
