When was the Devise for the Succession first issued?

What was the succession Henry VIII planned in his will?
That Mary should succeed after Edward.
What was Northumberland’s incentive behind the Devise?
- He would certainly lose power if Mary succeeded.
- His son (Guildford Dudley) married Lady Jane Grey.
What did the Devise state?
That succession should go to Lady Jane Grey or her heirs.
Was the Devise driven by Northumberland or Edward?
- Edward strongly contributed and led the operation (religious incentive)
- Northumberland helped the operation in every way, having much to lose if plot failed.

- N lost support when marching toward Mary’s base, despite increasing pay.

August 1553 (In spite of renouncing his Protestantism)
What were the problems with female rulership?
- Unable to control faction.
- Unable to lead army.
- Marriage (husband authority)
Were fears surrounding female rulership realised?
No, not really. They were more principles that were broken than practical issues.
How did marrying Philip of Spain cause instability?
- Mary refused the council’s advice completely.
- Wyatt’s rebellion
- Wars into which Spain dragged England.

What were the motivations of the Kett rebellion?
- Marriage - Spaniards coming to England
- Religious sentiment (all leaders were Protestant.)
How many men joined Kett’s rebellion?

How does Mary’s response give off authority? (Implying she was a strong ruler)
She was advised to leave London, but instead stayed and gave a speech rallying against Kett’s rebellion.
How serious was the threat of Kett’s rebellion?
Quite serious. The force sent by Mary deserted and joined the rebels, increasing their numbers. The only way they were defeated was the wide support for Mary in London, which was a result of her speech.
What was the outcome of the rebellion?
- Defeated as soon as got to London.
- Wyatt, Suffolk executed.
- Lady Jane Grey + husband executed.
How many times did Philip stay in England over the course of his marriage with Mary?
Only twice.
