Phyllis’s Chocolate Covered Cherries

  • huamns only, URT mucous membranes, resp droplets
  • Some encapsulated, IgA protease, extract iron
  • URI/Meningitis/Bactermia-via encapsulated, acute epiglottitis/invasion of resporiatry epi in children; local spread from pharynx to sinuses, middle ear, lungs in normalpople
  • Slder pleomorphic gram neg coccipbacillary on chocolate agar that needs NAD and Hemin
  • Diptheria toxoid in under 2 years old, ceftriaone in all else

A

Board and Care

  • humans only-spread by resp droplets, 2wks incubation where just lacrimation and conjunctivas
  • trachael cytotoxin-activates IL1 and kills tracheal ciliated epi that would normally clear bacteria, adenyl cyclase toxin-calmodlin-activated cyclase, raise cAMP to impair neutrophils and induces apoptosis in macrophages, pertussis toxin (ADP ribosylates Gi protein-impairs leukocyte chemotaxis)….Filatmoous hemagglutin adehion-binds to cellular integrins, fimbrae that udnregous phase variation, BrkA-reduces sensitivity to complement
  • Whooping cough-running nose, malaise, dry cough–cyanisis, vomiting CNS damage, pnumotoroxax, hernia, penumoia-inuslin secretion up stops at 100 days
  • Blood agar and starch/charcoal (kill competitors)
  • macrolides, aceullar vaccine-DTaP

S.S. Cysteine Joins the Legion

  • environemtnal water, amoeba, macrophages (where replicate)
  • multiply in phagosome in macrophages by blocking fusion of phagosome and lysosome
  • Legionnaries-developed atypical pneumonia-diahhrea, near Sx, low salt, high fevers–Pontiac fever-no pneumonia-fever and malaise-self limited
  • need buffered charcoal yeast agar in present elf iron and cystine and antibiotics
  • legionella-Fluroquionolones>macrolides
