- Goes to Lymph nodes
- Gets into blood stream or lungs
Plague Symptoms:
Bubonic: Most common, Not very contagious
Pneumonic: Highly contagious
Septicemic: Not very contagious
Plague Clinical Tree
Lymph nodes->Fever/chills->Bacteremia->Recovery or Septicemic
Lung Colonization->Cardio-Respiratory distress->Bacteremia->Septicemic
Septicemic->systemic hemorrhaging-> DEATH
Plague Treatment
Quarantine Antibiotics -Aminoglycosides -Tetracyclines -No drug resistance known Supportive therapies (symptom-specific) Immunity is for life
Plague Prevention & Control
Control of rodent and flea populations
Public education
Vaccines:
Not available to U.S. public
Multiple types (not very good
Typhoid Fever Transmission
Humans are only host
Feces/urine contamination of food/water
Human vectors:
- Asymptomatic carriers
- Individuals with colonized gallbladders
Typhoid Fever Disease Course
- Bacteria ingested
- Enter bloodstream
- Consumed by phagocytes (but not destroyed)
- Phagocytes carry them to gallbladder, liver, spleen
- From gallbladder back to intestines (cycle then repeats)
Salmonella Symptom Spectrum
Large Percentage: asymptomatic
Medium Percentage: Gastroenteritis (diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration)
