A

Edward relies on the nobility a lot to keep the peace. This is because Edward cannot afford a police or standing army. He often has to turn a blind eye to lawlessness because he doesn’t have enough money to pay men to fight.

Finances

A

Kings are expected to finance their own government, Edward inherited York’s lands so his own estates provide £30,000 per year.

Appointed agents to inspect collection of revenues. E.G. Duchy of Lancaster made £347 per year in 1476 and £885 in 1483.

However, financial improvements are inconsistent. E.G. Duchy of York down £7,391 to £6,696.

Customs Revenue

A

Went from £25,000 per year to £34,000.

1483- granted special licence to bring foreign traders. They are able to teach new methods of dyeing cloth, hopes this will improve trade.
