Findings of Ainsworths study

She discovered main patterns of behaviours in the infants observed (3 consistent clusters)

Secure attachment?
-moderate strange anxiety, easy to soothe separation anxiety and enthusiastic upon reunion

66% were found to be SA

Insecure avoidant?
-low stranger anxiety, indifferent separation anxiety, avoids contact upon reunion

22% were found to be IA

Insecure resistant?
-high stranger anxiety, distressed separation anxiety, seeks and rejects upon reunion

12% were found to be IR

SA-strong and contented attachment to caregiver due to sensitive responsiveness. Comfortable with social interaction and intimacy = healthy subsequent cognitive and emotional development

IA-children who tend to avoid social interaction and intimacy with others

IR-both seek and reject intimacy and social interaction
