Breathing Flashcards
What are the parts of the breathing system?
Larynx, trachea, rings of cartilage, bronchus, lungs, bronchioles, intercostal muscles, alveoli, diaphragm
What is the function of the larynx?
Responsible for making sounds
What is the function of the trachea?
Allows air in and out of the lungs
What is the function of the rings of cartilage?
Keeps the air-tubes open
What is the function of the bronchus?
Carries air from the trachea to the lungs
What’s the function of the lungs?
Breathing organs
What is the function of the bronchioles?
Thin tubes which carry air within the lungs
What is the function of the intercostal muscles?
Causes the rib cage to move up and down during breathing
What is the function of the alveoli?
Tiny air sacks covered in a network of narrow blood vessels. Oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged in the alveoli.
What is the function of the diaphragm?
A sheet of muscle that moves up and down during breathing causing air to move in and out of the lungs
How much nitrogen to we breath in/out?
In= 78% out=78%
How much oxygen do we breath in/out?
In=21%. Out=16%
How much carbon dioxide do we breath in/out?
In=0.03%. Out=4%
When does gaseous exchange occur?
When oxygen from the air is swapped with carbon dioxide from the body
Name three dangers of smoking?
Tar damages the lining of the bronchioles, nicotine damages the heart and blood vessels, smoking during pregnancy stops the baby from receiving enough oxygen
