What is a drug?
A substance that can be natural or manufactured in a laboratory which introduced into the body has an effect on the way the mind and body works
What is a prescription drug?
drugs that are prescribed by a doctor, they are legal but only for the person who they are prescribed to
What are Buddhists views on smoking?
Buddhists say nothing directly about smoking but its harmful and may go against the first precept, passive smoking goes against metta and karuna because of harm it does to others, Tanha is craving and the cause of addiction and the root of suffering
what are Christian views on smoking?
Christians may disagree with smoking because of the harm that it does to others – contradict teaching such as the good Samaritan
what are Buddhist views on alcohol?
5th precept “do not take substances which cloud the mind,” goes against right mindfulness and right action and right speech.
what are Christian views on alcohol?
permitted by Christians and is used for the celebration of the Eucharist/ “your body is a temple of the holy spirit, drinking causes excess harm to the body which causes offence to god as the body is a gift to us.
What are the taxes on alcohol and smoking?
Tax and duty account for 80% of the cost of a packet of cigarettes, some of the money of the tax goes towards NHS spending,
why would you take an illegal drug?
- Peer pressure
- Relaxation
- Looks cool
- Escape from poverty
What are the methods aimed at reducing drug abuse?
Sending them to clinics, sending them on alcohol/drug programmes
The money raised from taxes should go towards NHS and these programmes to prevent people from drinking in the first place and to help them recover
The money shouldn’t go to these programmes as not all the people are alcoholic and therefore they might want the tax revenues spent on other things like education and defence
what is the law and drugs?
have to be 18 to legally drink heroin and ecxtasy are class A
What are Christian and Buddhists views on drugs?
Crime, prostitution, hurting loved ones
Buddhists would say that it clouds the mind, go against right action, speech, livelihood
Christians would say the “body is a temple of the holy spirit,” so it would be misusing the body, it goes against the gift of life, sympathetic to the poverty of circumstances that led to drug addiction
