silas set out agian that morning but still couldn’t
find tom
silas mentions something about a letter from sis, but then the doctor arrives with
tom on a mattress and jim tied up in sally’s calico dress
some of the men wanted to hang jim as an example to all
other slaves
other men disagree because Jim didn’t
belong to them
they curse at Jim and hit him and bring him back to the hut and chain his legs and hands and say that he will only
have bread and water
they also say that there will be farmers with
guns at night to guard the hut and a bull dog tied to the door during day
the doctor then says not to treat Jim badly because
Jim is a good person
the doctor tells them how Tom wouldn’t listen to him and that Tom threatened him and that th edoctor said he needed help and when Jim heard that, he
came out and helped the doctor to fix up Tom
the doctor also says how Jim had been risking his freedom and that when the men came along in the skiff and tied him up, Jim
never resisted
the doctor says that Jom is worth
$1000 and kind treatment
tom wakes up finally and he tells aunt sally everyting about how
they set Jim free
tom told sally everything because he thought that Jim escaped and when he finds out that jim was caught agian, he
becomes upset
then tom says that jim isn’t
a slave, but that he’s a free man
miss watson had died 2 months ago, and she was ashamed that she was gonna
sell jim down the river so she set Jim free in her will
sally is confused as to why tom would want to free jim if he is already free and tom says that he just wanted
the adventure of it
