What triggered the Red River Resistance?

A

The HBC, Britain and Canada decided they would transfer Rupert’s Land to Canada, but they didn’t consult the Metis people of Red River first. Canada sent surveyors, who invaded the Metis land. The people were also facing difficulties like crop failures, less buffalo, and epidemics

Q

How did the second Metis uprising start

A

Canada had a plan to build a railway across Canada to B.C. Land speculators had arrived and were tracking land along the route they thought the railway would go. This sometimes went through Metis settlements. The Metis sent many petitions to fix the problem but Canada’s government did not respond. In 1884 Gabriel dumont went to get help from Louis Riel. When the Metis declared a provisional government at Batoche, Canada sent out 600 troops. The battle of Batoche lasted three days.
