5.2 - Phagocytosis Flashcards
(3 cards)
1
Q
Process of phagocytosis
A
- pathogens release chemicals - attracts a phagocyte
- phagocyte recognises pathogen’s antigens as non-self - causes phagocyte to bind to the pathogen
- phagocyte engulfs the pathogens
- pathogen is contained within a phagosome
- lysosome (phagosome) contains hydrolytoc enzymes - lysozomes - fuses with phagosome and forms a phagolysozome
- Digests and destroys the pathogen
2
Q
What is phagocytosis? (type of defence and what does it involve)
A
a type of non-specific defence involving phagocytes
3
Q
What are phagocytes (type of cell and purpose of it, where is it found)?
A
- type of WBC
- engulfs and destroys pathogens
- found in the blood and body tissues of many organisms
