How did blacks get to work?
They started walking or carpooling where available.
Very soon what started happening?
The bus companies were losing money (90%).
How did white groups retaliate?
Carpool driver and people waiting for lifts were arrested. Martin Luther king was arrested and jailed. King’s house was bombed.
When and why was King arrested and jailed?
January 1956 for speeding.
Over the next twelve months what continued?
17,000 blacks in Montgomery refused to use the bus service.
What did the Supreme Court do in the end?
Made bus segregation illegal.
When did the new law begin?
20th December 1956.
What then happened in June 1956?
Two federal judges ruled that the segregation law was unconstitutional.
When the Supreme Court agreed with the judges what happened?
Segregation was made illegal in the following month.
What did the boycott show?
Non-violent direct action could work and by refusing to cooperate with the system it could be changed.
