Photosynthesis Flashcards
Name three parts of cells that plants and animals have.
Cell membrane; Nucleus; Cytoplasm
Why are plant leaves green?
Chlorophyll in plants have a green pigment meaning that they absorb blue and red light and reflect green.
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Water + CO2 + light energy = glucose + oxygen
What is the purpose of glucose and oxygen in photosynthesis?
The plant cells need both things for energy in the cells
How do you test for starch?
Use iodine to see if liquid turns blue black
Name three things that affect photosynthesis.
Amount of light; water; CO2; chlorophyll; temperature
What is respiration?
When cells turn oxygen into energy
What are variegated leaves?
Leaves with two or more different pigment.
They may be wait in certain places.
What is the wax cuticle used for?
To protect the leaf and keep water inside.
What are the stomata?
Tiny holes that allow gas exchange. They are situated at the bottom of the leaf and are surrounded by guard cells.
What do the guard cells do?
To open and close the stomata to stop the loss of water.
Why do plants have an air space?
So the Carbon dioxide can diffuse through the leaf into the palisade mesophyll.
Explain the lower epidermis.
It’s where all the stomata are for gas exchange.
Explain the spongy mesophyll.
This allows CO2 to diffuse into the chloroplast- filled cells. Also contains veins to transport water.
Explain the palisade mesophyll.
These cells contain most of the plants chloroplasts and it is where the most photosynthesis happens.
