Digestion Flashcards
What does the alimentary canal do in the process of digestion?
(Small intestine) it is the tube passing right through the the body and the nutrients cannot be used by cell until they have passed through the walls of the alimentary canal. This process is called absorption
List the parts of the human body
Mouth, oesophagus, liver, gallbladder, stomach, pancreas, small intestine, large intestine, colon, anus
Define digestion
Before absorption can occur large pieces of food must be broken into smaller ones and large molecules into small ones.
How do teeth help with digestion
Break down food physically by chewing, tearing and grinding the substance between the teeth
What does saliva do
Helps with break down of food chemically
What does amylase do
Breaks down starch into sugar (in the mouth)
What does protease do
Breaks down proteins to amino acids (in the stomach)
What does lipase do?
Breaks down fats to fatty acids and glycerol (small intestines)
What substance are absorbed through walls of small intestine to the blood
Amino acids, sugar, fatty acids, glycerol
What substance absorbed through colon
Water
Name the parts of villi
Lacteal, capillary network, nerve, mucous cell, columnar epithelial cell
