Q

How does an erection occur?

A
  • Stimuli causes NO to be released, which in turn increases cGMP in certain areas of the penis
  • cGMP causes SM relaxation of erectile tissues, and arterial expansion. Increased blood flow to corpus cavernosum. Veins are compressed
  • phosphodiesterase breaks down cGMP to limit erection
