Sedimentary - limestone, sandstone (compressed remains)
Metamorphic - marble, quartzite (changed by great heat/pressure)

Limestone

A
  • Skeletons of tiny sea creatures and shells pile over millions of years on the sea beds of shallow seas
  • particles are compressed together
  • layers of strata
  • permeable, easily weathered
  • used: manufacturers (cement), buildings (GPO), Farming (soil conditioner)
  • Burren, Co. Clare

Marble

A
  • When magma forces its way into limestone it puts it under great heat and pressure causing it to change colour
  • hard, cystalline rock
  • used: fireplaces, headstones
  • can be different colours eg. green conamara
