What are the two cells of cartilage?

95% mostly water
The ECM of cartilage is rich in what two proteins?
Glucosaminoglycans and proteoglycans
Cartilage has what two methods of growth?
Apositional growth and interstitial growth
What is apositional growth?
Growth by addition to an existing surface; generation of new chondroblasts (involves perichondrium; adds new matrix to outside)
What is interstitial growth?
Growth by internal expansion; proliferation of chondrocytes and formation of isogenous groups (matrix is added internally; growth from within)
What are the three types of cartilage?
Hyaline, elastic, and fibrocartilage
What is the overall composition of hyaline cartilage ECM?
Water, proteoglycans, hyaluronic acid, and type 2 cartilage
The matrix of cartilage is mainly acidophilic or basophilic? what color?
Generally basophilic, purple
Perichondrium is eosinophilic or basophilic?
Eosinophilic, pink
What is the overall composition of elastic cartilage?
The same as hyaline with the addition of elastic fibers
What are four places that elastic fibers are found?
Auricle (a.k.a. pinna), auditory canal, auditory tube (a.k.a. pharyngotympanic tube), epiglottis
Does hyaline cartilage have perichondrium?
Yes with few exceptions
Does elastic cartilage have perichondrium?
Yes
